A Little About Softball Bats

A Little About Softball Bats
By guest author: Vincent O'Neil

There are a lot of softball bats out there and it can be confusing as to what you might need. There are aluminum and graphite bats, long bats and short bats, different grips and tapers. What you need is largely preference but let us go over some of the pros and cons of the softball bat styles.

Firstly, the material, a wooden softball bat is rather rare these days, so we will skip right to aluminum to start. Aluminum is used in many things because of its light weight, same with softball; the light weight offers you great control. This metal is particularly durable considering its weight to longevity ratio. Generally, a lighter bat of this material will last longer and will have a bigger sweet spot as well, a great combination for anyone who wants to buy one. A double layer bat will give the hitter a little more power than a single layer.

Graphite is the next material to go over, the softball bat is lined with graphite or titanium and it is not made of it. This material is usually added to a thin walled aluminum bat to increase strength without much added weight. Not only does this reduce the weight with the size of the bat but the sweet spot is also enhanced even more. The lining will help with the concussion from the impact of the ball and not cause as much pain in the hands.

You can choose a bat based on your age or your height and your weight. The best way is based on your height and weight because everyone is different at different ages. Be sure to ask the sales rep what should fit your height and weight or get a chart online. Slowpitch softball bats and fastpitch softball bats are just as easy to find as the other, so you should be able to get what you need without much trouble.

The main concern is getting a softball bat that fits the hitter and not just using any old bat. Making sure the weight to length ratio is good for the size and weight of the hitter; it will pay off by putting the right power to the ball. It will be easier to swing and more accurate when it is in motion. So decide on the size of bat you need and take a look at the materials to see what will suit you.
