Softball Drills

Softball Drills
By guest author: Kevin Stith

It is beneficial for a softball trainer to concentrate on increasing power, flexibility, and speed, and basic activities should include weightlifting, plyometrics, flexibility, and short burst sprint interval training. A softball player should increase his or her speed through "interval training," also known as "running sprints." Speed enhancement methods such as "assisted acceleration" or "over speed training" train a runner to move legs more speedily. In addition, "resisted acceleration" or "overload training" utilizes methods such as dragging a sled and parachutes.
There are various types of softball drills such as the all-around, deadball, fence, fungo fielding, line relay, loadfire, and pick-up. Some other examples are the wrist roll, stride, rocking, quick-hit, and lead-and-fire.

All around drill is a great drill for working on an infield quickly and warming up. It is beneficial for teaching players how to back up a throw. Deadball drill is employed to strengthen the mechanics of pitching and to teach players to lift up a dead ball with their hands. Fence drill helps in developing faster bat swing. Fungo fielding drill offers players an opportunity for fielding a large number of ground balls. Moreover, Line relay drill helps to simulate throwing under softball game conditions. The loadfire drill also helps in developing and strengthening essential throwing fundamentals. Pick-up drill works on fielding fundamentals. Wrist roll drill is used to improve bat speed and control, by facilitating maximum effectiveness in hurling a bat at a ball. Stride drill helps a player to gain knowledge of automatically stepping to a ball, instead of stepping out of a box while striking, and this needs enough practice.

It is important for a player to train the trunk and upper body equally. A player needs to condition the muscles that support his or her trunk, or central part, and back, abdomen, and legs. This reduces stress on a throwing arm and permits lower body to supply more power throughout an entire throwing motion, resulting in less arm injuries and increased throwing pace.

Easton Fastpitch Softball Bats - Stealth Clarity & Synergy

Easton Fastpitch Softball Bats - Stealth Clarity & Synergy
By guest author: Brian Gooberneck

Before 1969 bat manufacturing was a pretty straight forward affair. That all changed when Easton released the first aluminum bat, a radical change in technology that launched the little known company into the limelight. Since then Easton has continued to innovate, with each item in their complete line of fastpitch softball bats, gloves and bags reflecting the careful consideration they give to functionality and technology. Their exclusive, patented technologies such as Carbon Nanotube (CNT), Vibration Reduction System (VRS) and Visual Composite Technology (VCT or Clarity), just to name a few; raise the bar in both functionality of a fastpitch softball bat and integrity of the game.

The Easton Clarity models, in particular, bring to the game a new era of bat integrity and performance. It's well known that once these composite bats are fully broken in they become more flexible and give more pop when hit. Although this is great for the individual user, it provides an unfair advantage in competition and is not allowed in league play. To counteract this, the various governing boards have set guidelines for bat usage; but until Clarity, there was no way to tell when a bat has been used beyond its legal limit. Clarity is an ultra-thin see through layer that encases the surface of the bat. This layer will start to develop tiny white cracks along the surface as the composite material starts to break down. By the time the bat is beyond legal usage it will be completely white, making it easier for Umps to determine the eligibility of the bat, thereby effectively maintaining the integrity of the ball game.

Of the Clarity models, the 2009 Easton Stealth Clarity is the most popular fastpitch softball bat around, and for good reason. The bat features ConneXion, the patented 2-piece technology that acts like a hinge and provides the most efficient energy transfer from handle to barrel. Also featured is CNT, a composite material that delivers both strength and flexibility, effectively lengthening the sweetspot. This combination of ConneXion and CNT make for a fast swinging bat with maximum head speed driving power into one of the longest hitting zones.

Another popular option is the Easton Synergy Clarity. This Easton fastpitch softball bat is also made of CNT, giving one of the longest hitting zones, but also features VRS (Vibration Reduction System) which eliminates vibration from hitting, making this one of the most comfortable bats to use. The Easton Synergy Clarity complies with all bat performance standards including ASA, USSSA, NSA, ISA, SSUSA, and ISF. Unlike the Easton Stealth Clarity, the Easton Synergy doesn't use ConneXion technology, delivering peace of mind to those who worry about breakage.

Softball Batting Tee Drills

Softball Batting Tee Drills
By guest author: Marc Dagenais

Hitting a softball can not be learnt to do overnight. You need to learn how to hit the ball by using drills which will give you the necessary skills to perform better at the plate. Some of the best drills use a batting tee and this article has several of these types of drills. Use a couple of these softball hitting drills and you will really notice how much better you are getting at hitting the ball.

Drill 1 - Deflated Volleyball

Purpose: To emphasize keeping the knees together with a short, balanced, stride.

Procedure: The batter assumes normal position at the T with a deflated volleyball placed between her knees. The batter then swings through the ball while remaining balanced and gripping the volleyball with her knees.

Drill 2 - Down on One Knee

Purpose: To concentrate on keeping the barrel above the hands to hit the high pitch. The only way to hit the high pitch is to tomahawk the ball.

Procedure: The hitter is down on the back leg with the front leg extended straight. The ball is on a T above shoulder level when the batter is on one knee. The batter keeps her hands down and the barrel up, tomahawking the ball.

Drill 3 - Inside - Outside

Purpose: To emphasize taking the same stride, regardless of the pitch location.

Procedure: One T is placed on the inside corner of the plate (in front of the plate), and the second T is placed on the outside corner of the plate (even with the plate). While using correct mechanics, the batter alternates between hitting the inside ball and the outside ball.

Drill 4 - Regular T

Purpose: To practice keeping the head down and the barrel up.

Procedure: Place the T in the strike zone so that the barrel stays up. The batter should drive the front shoulder to the outside corner of the plate. After contact the batter should look inside the T. This ensures that the head stays down.

Drill 5 - Target on the Fence

Purpose: To practice a smooth rhythm and follow-through.

Procedure: Place a target on the fence and a T about 15-20 feet in front of the target. The batter tries to hit the target.

A Little About Softball Bats

A Little About Softball Bats
By guest author: Vincent O'Neil

There are a lot of softball bats out there and it can be confusing as to what you might need. There are aluminum and graphite bats, long bats and short bats, different grips and tapers. What you need is largely preference but let us go over some of the pros and cons of the softball bat styles.

Firstly, the material, a wooden softball bat is rather rare these days, so we will skip right to aluminum to start. Aluminum is used in many things because of its light weight, same with softball; the light weight offers you great control. This metal is particularly durable considering its weight to longevity ratio. Generally, a lighter bat of this material will last longer and will have a bigger sweet spot as well, a great combination for anyone who wants to buy one. A double layer bat will give the hitter a little more power than a single layer.

Graphite is the next material to go over, the softball bat is lined with graphite or titanium and it is not made of it. This material is usually added to a thin walled aluminum bat to increase strength without much added weight. Not only does this reduce the weight with the size of the bat but the sweet spot is also enhanced even more. The lining will help with the concussion from the impact of the ball and not cause as much pain in the hands.

You can choose a bat based on your age or your height and your weight. The best way is based on your height and weight because everyone is different at different ages. Be sure to ask the sales rep what should fit your height and weight or get a chart online. Slowpitch softball bats and fastpitch softball bats are just as easy to find as the other, so you should be able to get what you need without much trouble.

The main concern is getting a softball bat that fits the hitter and not just using any old bat. Making sure the weight to length ratio is good for the size and weight of the hitter; it will pay off by putting the right power to the ball. It will be easier to swing and more accurate when it is in motion. So decide on the size of bat you need and take a look at the materials to see what will suit you.

Fast Pitch Softball Hitting Drills

Fast Pitch Softball Hitting Drills
By guest author: Marc Dagenais

It's very important that if you play softball, you have some offensive upside to your game. In order to have that, softball hitting drills are usually a good starting point to pick up on some of the skills associated with batting and also help you refine hitting skills you may already have. Here are some great softball batting drills for you to work on which can help turn you into a hitting machine.

Drill 1 - Command T Drill

Purpose: To practice using the same stride while adjusting to different contact spots.

Procedure: Set one T at the contact spot for an inside pitch (front inside corner) and one for an outside pitch (back outside corner.) As the hitter plants the front foot, a partner calls "In" or "Out." The batter hits the ball called for by the partner.

Drill 2 - Two Stride

Purpose: To practice the stride and check for balance.

Procedure: The batter takes her stride with the hands going back to launch position. She freezes and holds that position to review stride length, foot position, hand position, and balance. If all is correct, she repeats the stride and this time swings to hit the ball off the T. If she recognizes a problem, she repeats the stride and does not swing until all is correct.

Drill 3 - High Toss

Purpose: To learn to keep the barrel above the ball.

Procedure: The tosser throws from a standing position. The hitter hits tosses that are high inside and high outside.

Drill 4 - In Close

Purpose: To develop quick reactions to the ball and a small stride.

Procedure: The hitter stands about 30 feet from the machine. Set the machine to throw at the regular speed used at the normal distance. The hitter must react quickly after seeing the ball and use her normal swing, focusing on getting the bat out quickly. Read more.

Softball player carried around bases by opponents

Softball player carried around bases by opponents
wgnradiovideo
The footage was taken by Sue Wallin, a parent at the game. Sara Tucholsky of Western Oregon is up to bat against Central Washington. The video picks up as Tucholsky hits her first ever - in her life - home run. Just past 1st base, she tears a ligament in her knee and is unable to run any further. The umpires state that if her teammates or coaches assist her she will be declared out and if a pinch runner is substitued for her, her homer will be declared a single. Hearing this, Central Washington's Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace offer to carry her around the bases. Thus ends Tucholsky's softball season and career.
